Suspected drone falls in Romania, causing fire

Romania has reported that an unidentified object, possibly a drone, fell on the country's territory on the night of 1-2 October amid Russian attacks on Ukrainian regions.

Details: The Romanian Ministry of National Defence reported that its radar surveillance system detected new drone attacks targeting civilian facilities and infrastructure in Ukraine near the river border with Romania, in the northern area of Tulcea County.

At around 05:00, the fall of an object, possibly a drone, was reported in the area of Plauru in Tulcea County, followed by a fire. No casualties or material damage were reported.

A General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations fire engine and Ministry of National Defence (MoND) teams were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the fire. The area has been secured, and specialised MoND teams will conduct on-site investigations.

Quote from the Romanian Ministry of National Defence: "We specify that the radar systems of the Ministry of National Defence did not report any unauthorised incursion into the national airspace last night."

Background:

  • On the night of 28-29 September, Romania tracked an aerial asset near its airspace and scrambled fighter jets to monitor the situation. No incursion into Romanian airspace was reported at the time.
  • However, on the morning of 29 September, the country's Ministry of National Defence received reports that debris from an object had been found in Brăila County.
  • On the night of 29-30 September, the Romanian Ministry of National Defence detected an aerial asset moving from Ukraine's Odesa Oblast; allied aircraft were scrambled.
