On Friday 2 October, the Japanese government expanded its sanctions list against Russia over its aggression against Ukraine, adding 33 Russian companies and nine individuals.

Details: Reportedly, Japan also imposed restrictions on four companies from Türkiye and the UAE, as well as 35 vessels of the so-called shadow fleet.

The individuals added to the list include those connected to Russia's military-industrial complex. Among them are Vladislav Kostin, General Director of VNIIR Progress; Dmitry Lelikov, Deputy General Director of Rostec; Vasily Brovko, Director of Rostec; Igor Khomenko, General Director of TROS; Sergei Ushko, Director of TROS; Vladislav Lobaev, former president of the Lobaev Foundation; as well as Alexander Sychugov, General Director of Voskresensky Aggregation Factory; and Alexander Zakharov, owner of ZALA Aero (CST).

Sanctions were also imposed on companies such as Voentorg, VNIIR Progress, Alabuga Development, and Uraldronzavod, among others.

Japan imposed sanctions on Russia in connection with its invasion of Ukraine and has expanded the sanctions lists several times.

Earlier, the Japanese authorities strongly condemned Russian leader Vladimir Putin's visit to Iturup Island.

Background: Prior to this, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office announced a new Russia sanctions package. These measures are being taken against the backdrop of Russia launching over 3,000 jet-powered drones towards Ukraine in September.
