The funding includes £20 million to strengthen Ukraine's energy security. The money will support teams carrying out emergency repairs to the power grid following Russian strikes, provide back-up generators and solar power sources for use during blackouts, and fund new technologies to help Ukraine diversify its energy supplies.

A further £34 million will go towards protecting and maintaining heating and water supplies for Ukrainian families over the winter and providing direct cash assistance. The UK will work with the Ukrainian government and humanitarian organisations on the ground, including UNICEF, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the Ukrainian Red Cross, to deliver the support.

Background:

  • Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Miliband, who had arrived in Kyiv on a visit, had been invited to visit Pryluky to see the reality of Russia's daily strikes.
  • During his visit to Pryluky, Miliband assured Ukraine that the UK would provide "concrete support".
