Details: EU foreign ministers plan to further isolate Russia and Belarus in international sport.

"Ministers also discussed preventing the return of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international sporting competitions. We face a similar situation in the cultural sphere," Kallas said.

Quote: "Sports and culture must not become vehicles for whitewashing Russian aggression

Based on today's discussion, my services, together with the commission, will put forward proposals on how to sustain Russia's isolation in global sports.

This can go in parallel with further sanctions on those destroying Ukrainian cultural heritage."

Background:

  • In late June, the IOC made changes to the Olympic Charter that could facilitate Russia's return to international sport. On 7 July, it decided to temporarily reinstate the Russian Olympic Committee.
  • In July, Kallas condemned the decision.
  • The changes have prompted a strong backlash from the sporting community and officials.
