Quote: "In total, 16 ballistic missiles were launched overnight. More than 280 drones as well. Tragically, there have been casualties and hits in Kyiv, including on the Pivdennyi (South) Bridge. A serious escalation in Russia's operation against our logistics. There were also strikes on Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Kherson and Chernivtsi oblasts. Almost everywhere, Russia's targets were the energy sector, logistics and ordinary urban infrastructure."

Details: Zelenskyy said that 12 people were injured following a Russian strike on a university campus and the surrounding area on the evening of 26 October, five of whom are students and university staff. Whilst emergency services were assisting people and dealing with the aftermath of the first strike, the Russians deployed ballistic missiles again.

The president emphasised: "The artificial and prolonged delays in the delivery of interceptor packages for Patriot and NASAMS systems, which unfortunately have occurred recently, are directly helping Russia achieve the objectives of its terrorist campaign."

Background:

  • On the night of 26-27 October, the Russians attacked Ukraine with Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles and 280 Shahed (69 jet-powered) and Gerbera attack drones and Parodiya decoy UAVs. The city of Kyiv was the main target of the attack.
  • Early reports indicated that as of 09:00 of 27 October, Ukrainian air defence forces had destroyed or jammed 257 Russian aerial assets: two Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles and 255 Shahed (56 jet-powered), Gerbera and other types of drones.
  • On 26 October, Zelenskyy announced that Kyiv had been waiting for nearly a month for Pete Hegseth to sign off on missiles for Patriot and NASAMS air defence systems, and instructed his team to discuss the matter with the US side again.
