Ukraine's Foreign Ministry comments on appointment of Russian national as UN deputy secretary-general

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry has said that appointing a representative of Russia, the aggressor state, to head the UN's mine action work undermines trust in the organisation.

Quote: "Moscow has mined the United Nations.
Fact 1: After more than a decade of Russian aggression, Ukraine has become the most mine-contaminated country in the world.
Fact 2: A serving Russian ambassador who has represented the regime throughout its full-scale war against Ukraine has been appointed to lead UN mine action.
Two facts. One reality.
It is unclear how the UN Secretariat reconciles these two facts or what outcomes it expects from such a combination."
Details: Tykhyi said that entrusting this responsibility to a representative of the aggressor state raises deep concerns and undermines trust in the United Nations.
"This appointment confirms what has been known for years: Russia's illegitimate occupation of the Soviet Union's permanent seat on the UN Security Council poisons the entire UN system," the spokesperson added.
