President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukraine could consider holding elections online, but the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) would need to pass the relevant legislation.

Quote: "All professions are important, but during wartime, being a soldier is the most important profession because soldiers risk their lives. Allowing elections to take place while not giving soldiers the opportunity to vote would be unfair. It would be 100% unfair. We could consider online elections. That may be feasible, but parliament would then have to look for and find a solution."

Details: Zelenskyy added that Ukrainian troops on the line of contact are opposed to elections being held right now because there is no technical way to organise voting in the trenches, where millions of Ukrainian defenders are stationed.

He explained that these are the very people who have preserved Ukraine's statehood and continue to defend it, so prioritising their right to elect the head of state is a basic prerequisite for a fair electoral process.

Background: Zelenskyy said on 11 October that Ukraine was willing to hold elections if Russia agreed to a full ceasefire lasting 60 days.
