Foreign Ministry Explains Logic of ‘Roadmap’ to Implement Minsk Agreements

Monday, 11 July 2016, 20:48

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin believes that the logic behind the roadmap to implement the Minsk Agreements is to clearly identify the sequence of security-related measures. He stated this at a briefing with the Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn, Deputy Secretary General for the EU External Action Service Helga Schmid and diplomats from the Eastern Partnership countries in Kyiv, UNIAN reports.

The meeting in a ‘G5 + Ukraine’ format in Warsaw was seeking ways to make Russia fulfill the Minsk Agreements amid a lack of any real security steps by Moscow, the Minister said. "Therefore, the logic behind the roadmap is to determine the sequence of steps with regard to a ceasefire and withdrawal of Russian troops, heavy weapons, and mercenaries," Klimkin explained.

The steps also relate to "granting access to the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to effectively monitor the Donbas territory and the uncontrolled section of the Ukraine-Russia border; as well as providing security before, during and after the elections all the way until normal life gets back to Donbas," he added.

On July 9, President Poroshenko in a follow-up to a ‘G5 + Ukraine’ meeting during the NATO summit in Warsaw said that the leaders of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Ukraine would develop a roadmap to ensure security in eastern Ukraine.
