Spain: No Bail-Out Option for Chernovetskyi Jr.

El magistrat del jutjat d’instrucció 21 de Barcelona [Sp.: 21 District Court of Barcelona] appointed arrest as the provisional measure in the criminal case of Stepan Chernovetskyi, the son of notorious ex-mayor of Kyiv Leonid Chernovetskyi, Ukrinform reports with reference to Diari de Girona.

All the people arrested in this case are accused of laundering at least €10 million. The eighth person, who is a citizen of Spain, was prohibited from leaving the country by the court. Stepan Chernovetskyi and seven other suspects in the case were arrested without a bail-out option.

El Periódico quoted the defence of Chernovetskyi stating that the money he obtained were not laundered, but received as the legitimate proceeds from the sale of a bank he owned [ed: Chernovetskyi family created and owned Pravex-Bank, which was among Ukraine’s Top-50, until it was sold to Italian Intesa Sanpaolo in 2014 for $74M].

Earlier Leonid Chernovetskyi threatened to ‘sue those Spanish journalists for spreading lies and ask for millions in compensation’ because, according to Chernovetskyi Sr., his son was at his Spanish home, answering questions from the police about another person’s business.

On Wednesday, June 13, media published photos clearly showing Stepan Chernovetskyi being detained and escorted in handcuffs by the Spanish police.
