The dead volunteers were citizens of the Netherlands, Germany, France and Australia. The death of the French citizen - apparently the same person - was reported the day before by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"We want to honour the memory of our brothers and sisters Ronald Vogelaar, Michael O'Neill, Bjorn Benjamin Clavis and Wilfried Blerio. There are no words to express our gratitude for their service and supreme sacrifice," says the Legion on its webpage.

The Guardian has gathered additional information about the dead volunteers. For example, AFP reported that Ronald Vogelaar, a Dutch citizen, died as a result of shelling and was buried on 21 May in Kharkiv.

The Australian O'Neill was also reported dead in May.

The French citizen was reported dead as a result of artillery shelling in the Kharkiv region; the French Foreign Ministry confirmed only the fact of his death.

According to Georgian media, as of the end of May, 11 volunteers from Georgia who were fighting in the International Legion had died in Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war.
