Russia is deliberately misinforming the world community that the reason for the global increase in food prices is the sanctions introduced by the USA and other countries, although they do not apply to food and fertilisers.

This was stated by Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US ambassador to the UN, according to a post by the US embassy in Ukraine on Twitter.

"Russia claims, falsely, that sanctions posed by the United States and our allies are to blame for the global increase in food prices. It’s pure misinformation," Thomas-Greenfield said.

She emphasised that Russia is well aware that food and fertilisers are excluded from US sanctions.

Background:

The countries of the European Union have agreed on a new package of restrictive measures against Russia, which includes a ban on the import of Russian gold.

Consumer prices in the eurozone are growing at a record pace, and inflation reached 8.6% year-on-year in June.
