Quote from Maliar: "These schools will never ring the first bell and hear children's laughter."

The official added that 379 children who died at the hands of the occupiers could not go to school on the first day of the academic year; there, they were to attend the Peace lesson, the first lesson of the year.

Another 735 children were injured.

"The statement of the Ministry of Defence of the occupying country regarding possible provocations on this day looks particularly cynical," adds Hanna Maliar.

The deputy minister stresses that the Defence Forces of Ukraine strictly observe the norms of international humanitarian law; they do not attack civilian facilities and protect the civilian population from such actions by the Russian occupying forces.

"UNESCO, UNICEF, and international human rights organisations should check the facilities mentioned in the statement of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation and find out whether the aggressor uses these for military purposes," Maliar wrote.
