Details: Surovikin has held the office of the Commander of the Aerospace Forces of the Russian Federation since 31 October 2017.

He participated in the armed conflict in Tajikistan (1992-1997), the Second Chechen War (1999-2009) and the military operation in Syria (2015-to date).

Before this appointment, the Russian forces in Ukraine were led by General Aleksandr Dvornikov.

Note: In June 2022, media reported that Aleksandr Dvornikov, the Commander of the Southern Military District [of Russian forces in Ukraine], was dismissed from office.

Reporters pointed out that Colonel General Gennady Zhidko led the Commander of Russian forces in Ukraine after that.

Meanwhile, Surovikin was supposed to head the Southern Military District. He was directly responsible for Russian troops’ actions in Donbas.
