Georgian government slowly kills Saakashvilli – Zelenskyy

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that the Georgian government is slowly killing Mikheil Saakashvilli, the country’s former president and currently a citizen of Ukraine.

Details: Zelenskyy said that he was showed photos demonstrating Saakashvilli’s current state of health.

Background:

  • During a video call at a court hearing on 1 February, Mikheil Saakashvilli, the ex-president of Georgia, showed what horrible condition he was in.
  • The court in Georgia now examines a possibility of postponing Sakaashvilli’s prison sentence. 
  • Currently Saakashvilli is in the intensive care unit of Vivamedi hospital in Tbilisi as his condition deteriorates. 
  • In May, Volodymyr Zelenskyy amended a decree of his predecessor Petro Poroshenko and restored Saakashvilli’s Ukrainian citizenship
  • The former leader of Georgia, Saakashvilli was arrested in October 2021, staying in custody ever since. The Georgian government accuses him of abusing power while in office in 2004-2007 and 2008-2013).
