Polish Prosecutor's Office starts investigating incident with spilled Ukrainian grain

The Chelm District Prosecutor’s Office of Poland has started an investigation into the incident with the spilling of grain carried by Ukrainian lorries near the Dorohusk checkpoint on the Polish-Ukrainian border.

Details: The investigation is being conducted on the fact of the destruction of property and violating customs security.

The punishment for such offences is imprisonment for up to five years.

"We are interrogating the witnesses, gathering video surveillance footage and the documents of the three means of transport," Agnieszka Kępka, spokesperson of the Prosecutor’s Office, said.

Background:

  • On Friday, 9 February, farmers from all around Poland started a protest action which is expected to last for 30 days. It provides for, among other things, blocking the roads and border crossings with Ukraine.
  • Polish agrarians protesting near the Dorohusk checkpoint on the Polish-Ukrainian border have spilled grain from three Ukrainian lorries on the ground.
  • Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, stated that the guilty must be held accountable.
  • Polish Minister of Agriculture Cheslav Sekersky apologised to Ukraine for the spilled grain incident.
