As of March 2024, Ukrainian law enforcement officers have documented 45 cases of killings of prisoners of war, which are being investigated in 19 criminal proceedings. However, this figure is not final.

The proceedings establish not only the direct perpetrators of these crimes, but also those who may have ordered the execution of prisoners of war or did not react to their subordinates committing such actions. The killing of prisoners of war is a gross violation of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War and a serious international crime."

Details: The press service of the Prosecutor General's Office reported one particular case in which, under the procedural leadership of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Prosecutor's Office, a Russian army serviceman who shot a Ukrainian prisoner of war has been served with a notice of suspicion of violating the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder.

The SSU says the perpetrator is Dmitri Kurashov, a rifleman of the Storm-V assault detachment of the 127th Motorised Rifle Division of Russia’s Eastern Military District, who has multiple convictions.

According to the investigation and military counterintelligence of the SSU, on 6 January 2024, Kurashov shot a soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine whom the Russians had captured during a Russian "meat-grinder" assault. He fired at least three deliberately aimed shots at the captured Ukrainian.

Shortly afterwards, Ukrainian soldiers counterattacked and captured Kurashov and his fellow servicemen.

During an interrogation by the SSU, another Russian captive "told" on Kurashov, and the Security Service later collected other irrefutable evidence that the Russian was guilty of killing a captured soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the SSU said in a statement.
