Russia takes revenge on Moldova for expelling employee of Russian embassy

Russia has declared a member of the Moldovan embassy in Russia persona non grata in response to Moldova’s decision to expel an employee of the Russian embassy in Chișinău.

Details: Alexandru Chetraru, Chargés d'Affaires ad Interim of Moldova, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia on 6 August. A protest was declared against him due to the "unfriendly steps of official Chișinău".

The diplomat was handed a document declaring one employee of the embassy of Moldova in Russia persona non grata.

Background:

  • Last week searchers were conducted in the building of the Moldovan Parliament and two individuals were detained in connection with a treason case.
  • After that Chișinău announced that an employee of the Russian embassy had been expelled for activity incompatible with diplomatic status.
