Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that expecting Ukraine to return to its 2022 borders "would be political blindness".

Details: Lavrov claimed that "there is no talk about the 2022 borders [of Ukraine]".

Quote: "Regarding the 2022 borders, I don't think anyone is counting on them anymore, because to expect a return to those borders would be political blindness and a complete lack of understanding of what is happening."

Details: Lavrov also said Ukraine was to blame for Russia seizing its territories since 2014, claiming it happened because Ukraine did not comply with its agreements with Russia.

He added that ensuring Russia's interests and the rights of Russians on Ukrainian territory is the basis for negotiations on security guarantees for Ukraine.

The minister stated that Moscow is pinning its hopes for a settlement and the continuation of dialogue between Russia and the United States on this issue. He said Russia does not see the US moving away from its policy of holding an "open and honest dialogue with Russia" and announced that the third round of consultations between Russia and the US on "bilateral irritants" will take place this autumn.

Background: After meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 23 September, US President Donald Trump unexpectedly wrote that Ukraine, with EU support, could regain all its territories and "maybe even go further than that".
