Details: In Russia, conscription currently takes place twice a year: in spring and autumn.

The decree states: "The conscription of citizens of the Russian Federation aged 18 to 30, who are not in the reserve and are subject to military service, in the amount of 135,000 persons, shall be carried out from 1 October to 31 December 2025."

Putin also ordered the discharge of conscripts whose service terms have expired.

Earlier, Vladimir Tsimlyansky, Deputy Head of the Main Organisational and Mobilisation Directorate of the Russian General Staff, claimed that conscripts drafted in this autumn campaign would not be sent to fight in Ukraine.

He also noted that the campaign would use the Unified Register of Military Records, although paper summons would still be employed to notify citizens.

Background: Prior to this, the Russian State Duma, the lower house of parliament, approved a bill at first reading that would make military conscription take place all year round, from 1 January to 31 December, instead of twice a year as it currently does.
