More details: Havryliuk added that Russia is intensifying its airstrikes against Ukraine and increasing the volume of munitions used. Russian forces launched nearly 600 drones and around 50 missiles of various types against Ukraine on the night of 27-28 September alone.

The first deputy defence minister also explained that a multi-layered defence system is used to repel such attacks. It combines air defence, mobile fire groups, interceptor drones, electronic warfare equipment and combat aviation. The additional fighters, including Swedish Gripens for the first time, are intended to strengthen this system.

Background:

  • As of September 2025, Ukraine operates around 50 F-16s supplied by the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway.
  • In late August, Belgium recently pledged to hand over several F-16s in September, which are part of the 30 it has committed to provide. Before that, it became known that Norway would supply twice as many F-16 aircraft as officially announced.
  • In August 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine needs more fighter jets to ensure security in its airspace.
