Within just 24 hours, senior Russian officials have made contradictory statements on whether the "momentum" for settling Russia's war against Ukraine has been exhausted since the Alaska summit.

Details: Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said yesterday that the momentum generated by the Alaska meeting between Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump had been exhausted.

"Sadly, it must be stated that the strong momentum of Anchorage in favour of agreements has been largely exhausted due to the efforts of opponents and those who advocate 'war to the last Ukrainian', primarily among the Europeans," Ryabkov said.

Yet the following day, Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov said that US-Russia cooperation based on the Alaska summit agreements is ongoing.

"Any statements that the momentum from Anchorage is fading or has been exhausted are completely false," Ushakov said.

He claimed that contact between Russian and US representatives continues, "based on the agreements and understandings formulated immediately before and during the Alaska meeting".

Background:

  • Since the Putin-Trump meeting in Alaska on 15 August, the US president has been increasingly critical of Russia for its unwillingness to seek a settlement of the war in Ukraine.
  • After meeting Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump even said he believed Ukraine would be able to reclaim the territories occupied by Russia.
  • Recently, the US president also expressed confidence that he will end up settling the war Russia has unleashed against Ukraine.
