Quote: "Classmates of ten-year-old Karina told her Russian security services would lock her in a basement because she is Ukrainian [the Russians use basements as torture chambers]. Her brothers – seven-year-old Mark and four-year-old Stefan – were forced to sing patriotic Russian songs in kindergarten, and money was collected every month for the occupiers' forces."
Details: Bring Kids Back UA and Save Ukraine also highlighted the case of seven-year-old Nastia and two-year-old Yaroslav, who were rescued after losing their mother due to the inaction of Russian doctors.
The so-called child welfare service almost sent the children to an orphanage, despite having relatives who were ready to take custody of them.
Quote: "Nineteen-year-old Mykhailo was taken for interrogation by Russian soldiers, tortured and threatened with execution because his uncle was a veteran of the Anti-Terrorist Operation. At the time, he was only 17. As soon as he reached adulthood, the occupiers registered him for military service. [The ATO or Anti-Terrorist Operation is a term used from 2014 to 2018 by the media, the government of Ukraine and the OSCE to identify combat actions in parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts against Russian military forces and pro-Russian separatists – ed.]
Eighteen-year-old Veronika spent most of her life under occupation and studied in a Russian school. Despite this, she managed to preserve her Ukrainian identity. The first thing she did after crossing the Ukrainian border was tear up the Russian ID she had been forced to obtain."
