EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarína Mathernová says the corruption scandal in state-owned nuclear energy company Energoatom shows that Ukraine's anti-corruption institutions are genuinely functioning, while noting that the further development of the case will be crucial.

Details: The ambassador said many people have asked for her view on the Energoatom procurement scandal, in which a former business partner of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is one of those implicated.

Mathernová noted that the information released by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) has already resulted in the resignations of the current and former energy ministers, as well as Ukrainian sanctions being imposed against two key people implicated in the scheme.

Quote: "And importantly, the investigation continues, with the endorsement of the authorities. It's a strong signal that Ukraine's independent institutions are working – and that corruption can not be tolerated, even among high-ranking officials. Especially at a time when so many Ukrainians are suffering through many hours of blackouts and cold temperatures in their homes."

More details: Mathernová referred to the EU's chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, who said that the timing of the scheme's exposure was unfortunate for Ukraine, and acknowledged that it is, of course, a serious scandal.

Quote: "Corruption exists in many countries – it's like cancer, eating the societies from within. What matters is how quickly and decisively authorities respond. Ukraine's reaction so far shows determination. Preserving the independence of the anti-corruption architecture is crucial on Ukraine's path to the EU. It is also key to proving that Ukraine is serious about fighting corruption."

Background:

  • The European Commission believes the exposure of the corruption scheme demonstrates the effectiveness of Ukraine's anti-corruption bodies.
  • EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said that corruption is widespread across Europe and what matters is how countries respond. She expressed confidence in Ukraine's work to combat corruption with EU support.
  • European Commission spokesperson Guillaume Mercier said that recent investigations into corruption and the exposure of schemes involving senior officials have proved that Ukraine's anti-corruption bodies are functioning.
