Details: The prosecutor explained that the two Ukrainian suspects have not been detained, so there has been no opportunity to carry out proper legal proceedings.

Both men face life imprisonment. Nowak stressed that there are other individuals who have been detained in the case, although no charges have yet been brought against them.

He also noted that there is as yet no motion for pre-trial detention, so no arrest warrant has been issued at this stage.

Background:

  • On 18 November 2025, during a speech in the Sejm (Polish parliament), Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Polish investigators allege that two Ukrainian nationals cooperating with Russian intelligence services were responsible for acts of sabotage on Poland's railways.
  • Tusk said that Poland would demand the detention and extradition of the suspects.
  • Warsaw later announced that, in connection with these incidents, it is closing the Russian consulate in Gdańsk, the last such consulate remaining in Poland.
