Implementing the US "peace plan" in its current form could result in Russia receiving a territory almost the size of Luxembourg without having to fight for it, according to calculations by the French international news agency AFP based on data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Quote: "The US initiative, seen by AFP, calls for the withdrawal of the Ukrainian army from territories it still controls, leading to a net gain of approximately 2,300 sq km (888 sq miles) for Moscow – almost the same area as Luxembourg (2,590 sq km)".

Details: Among other things, Ukraine would cede nearly 5,000 sq km in Donetsk Oblast and 45 sq km in Luhansk Oblast.

In exchange, Moscow would reportedly return almost 2,000 sq km in Kharkiv Oblast, 450 in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, 300 in Sumy Oblast and 20 in Chernihiv Oblast.

Quote: "Ultimately, the plan proposed by Washington would effectively cede 20% of Ukraine's territory to recover less than 0.5%."

Background:

  • On 21 November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the Ukrainian people and said Ukraine now faces a difficult choice: it risks losing either its dignity or its key partner.
  • US President Donald Trump has given Ukraine until 27 November to agree to the "peace plan" proposed by the US.
