Details: On Saturday morning, Romania's Ministry of Defence said that on the night of 21-22 November, two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to monitor the airspace near the Ukrainian border in response to another Russian air attack.
At 01:33, an air-raid warning was issued for villages in the north of Tulcea County after Russian attack drones were identified in the area of the Ukrainian city of Izmail.
The ministry noted that no violations of Romanian airspace had been recorded. The fighter jets returned to their airbase in Borda at 03:42.
"We are in constant contact with our allies, sharing operational information in real time and acting decisively to guarantee the security of Romania and NATO's eastern flank," the statement added.
Background:
- As reported earlier, a Russian strike damaged the Orlivka border crossing between Ukraine and Romania; operations there have been suspended until the aftermath has been dealt with.
- Earlier this week, a drone flew over Romania and Moldova during a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine.
- Poland also scrambled aircraft at the time and pre-emptively closed the airports in Rzeszów and Lublin.
- On 17 November, several Romanian villages along the Danube were ordered to evacuate because of a fire on an LNG tanker near the Ukrainian shore following Russian strikes.
