NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said that Russia has no veto power over Ukraine's accession to the Alliance and that only NATO member states can make decisions on this issue.

Details: Commenting on Russia's insistence that Ukraine's membership of the Alliance is unacceptable, Rutte said that "Russia has no say or veto power over who can become a member of NATO".

Quote: "But in the Alliance, membership requires unanimity. At the summit in Washington we decided that Ukraine's path to NATO is irreversible. However, several allies, including the United States, have said that they are currently opposed to Ukraine joining."

More details: Rutte said that in the context of Trump's "peace plan", Ukraine needs "sufficiently reliable security guarantees" to ensure that Russia never again attempts to attack it if NATO membership "is not an option".

Background:

  • It was reported earlier that one of the points of the "peace plan" which the US side has begun to promote has envisaged Ukraine's commitment never to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
  • CNN has reported that the question of Ukraine's membership of the Alliance has remained one of the issues still under discussion between Ukraine and the United States.
