Decision rests with Ukraine – Canada's foreign minister on peace and territorial integrity

Anita Anand, Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, has said that "any decision regarding Ukraine rests solely with Ukraine".

Details: Anand said that Canada supports Ukraine and its territorial integrity, but that the final decision regarding Ukraine rests solely with Ukraine, particularly concerning its territorial integrity.

She added that on Wednesday, she spoke with Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha about the progress of peace negotiations.

Anand stated that Canada aims to support Ukraine and its decisions regarding the rule of law, peace, security and territorial integrity, adding that it is necessary to continually consider the impact of these decisions on Europe and the rest of the world.

Details: Anand noted that this issue will be actively discussed next week during the NATO foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels.

Background:

On 25 November, Trump stated that he has tasked Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll with finalising the terms of a proposed "peace agreement" between Russia and Ukraine. Witkoff is expected to travel to Moscow, and if talks reach the final stage, Trump plans to meet Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Trump believes Russia's biggest concession would be agreeing to stop fighting and not seize additional territory.
According to CNN, Ukraine and the US still disagree on three points of the proposed "peace agreement", including a demand that would see Ukraine withdraw without a fight from the part of Donetsk Oblast that is not currently occupied.
Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said she is concerned that the draft "peace plan" published in the media contained no concessions or commitments from the aggressor state, Russia.
