Trump declares Venezuela airspace "closed in its entirety", in move that may precede attack

US President Donald Trump has said he wants the airspace over Venezuela to be regarded as "closed in its entirety" – a move that may point to US military plans against the country.

Details: In a Truth Social post made at about 15:00 Kyiv time, Trump strongly advised against the use of Venezuelan airspace, which may indicate planned US strikes.

Quote: "To all Airlines, Pilots, Drug Dealers, and Human Traffickers, please consider THE AIRSPACE ABOVE AND SURROUNDING VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED IN ITS ENTIRETY. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

Background:

• In mid-November, the United States launched a large-scale military operation near Venezuela under the pretext of combating drug trafficking.
• Even then, it was suggested that the unprecedented deployment of military forces, including a carrier strike group, and earlier White House discussions of possible military operations in Venezuela point to preparations for an armed intervention.
• On 28 November, Trump said the US will "very soon" begin taking measures to halt the movement of Venezuelans suspected of drug trafficking on the ground.
