"Mop-up operation ongoing": Ukraine's commander-in-chief reports "encouraging information" from Kupiansk

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi has said that Ukrainian forces have significantly improved their tactical position in the city of Kupiansk in Kharkiv Oblast.

Quote: "I have worked with units of the search-and-strike grouping and the Kupiansk tactical group.

There has been a substantive conversation with the command staff of the search-and-strike grouping. We have discussed measures to stabilise the situation in the Kupiansk area.

I have heard reports on the operational situation – the information is encouraging. Our units have managed to significantly improve their tactical position directly in the city. Routes used by enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups for infiltration have been blocked.

Details: Syrskyi said that Ukrainian forces are now working on "gradually pushing the enemy out of its bridgehead to the north of the city, as well as from a number of other areas where Russian troops still maintain a presence".

• Oleksandr Syrskyi has earlier reported that work continues to identify Russian soldiers who have "infiltrated through our defences" in Kupiansk.
• Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin claimed on the evening of 21 November that Russian forces have fully captured the city of Kupiansk and warned Ukraine that the situation there could supposedly be repeated elsewhere. This claim has been denied by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Russia has not conducted any successful offensive operations on the front lines in recent weeks. "For instance, our troops have had greater success on the Kupiansk front. Although Russia claims it has captured Kupiansk, we have almost completely cleared the city of their forces," said Zelenskyy.
