Norway rejects possibility of deals with Kremlin akin to "new Yalta"

Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has stated that European NATO member states are convinced that any schemes to divide Europe, similar to the Yalta agreements after World War II, are unacceptable. [The Yalta agreements refer to the Yalta Conference (1945), where Allied leaders made decisions about the post-WWII European borders and spheres of influence without the full participation of the smaller nations affected, which ultimately led to decades of Soviet domination in Eastern Europe – ed.]

Details: Eide said that Europe must and will insist on its terms, as this concerns not only Ukraine's security. He explained that the key issue is that peace must be fair and lasting, and that this is a matter not only for Ukraine's future but also for Europe's future.
Eide added that they will not accept any new "Yalta" agreement.
The minister emphasised that the security architecture of the whole of Europe is being determined both on the battlefield in Ukraine and during the ongoing "peace talks".
He said that wars always end, but the post-war era that follows often lasts longer than the fighting itself. The security architecture, he noted, is shaped not only afterwards but also during a war's closing stages. He added that Europe's task is to keep Ukraine strong, as the continent's security framework is being forged by the war in Ukraine.
Background:
- Norway has also announced that it will provide a further US$500 million for US-made weapons for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
