The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has launched a second drone attack on Russian oil rigs in the Caspian Sea, forcing production processes to be suspended.

Quote: "Long-range drones operated by the SSU's Special Group Alpha have successfully attacked the Filanovsky oil production platform for the second time this week. Another platform, the Korchagin, was also hit. Both facilities belong to Lukoil-Nizhnevolzhskneft and operate in the Caspian Sea."

Details: Early reports indicate that the SSU drones damaged critical equipment on both ice-resistant rigs, shutting down production.

The SSU added that the Filanovsky field is one of the largest explored fields in Russia and the Russian sector of the Caspian Sea, with reserves estimated at 129 million tonnes of oil and 30 billion cubic metres of gas.

Background:

  • On 11 December, it was reported that long-range drones from the SSU's Special Group Alpha struck the Filanovsky oil rig owned by Lukoil-Nizhnevolzhskneft.
  • This was Ukraine's first strike on Russian oil production infrastructure in the Caspian Sea.
  • On 10 December, SSU Sea Baby naval drones struck the Dashan, an oil tanker belonging to the Russian shadow fleet, in the Black Sea.
