"I'm taking this with me to Brussels next week to represent the opinion of the silent majority. I hope the military doesn't charge any extra for excess baggage," Orbán said, noting that he will be flying to the summit on a government aircraft operated by the Hungarian Air Force.

Along with his post, the Hungarian prime minister included a picture of stacks of papers.

Background:

  • The Hungarian government has launched a new "national consultation" on tax increases, claiming that raising taxes is a requirement of the European Union in order to finance Ukraine and the "war".
  • Hungarian citizens received a letter from the government in which the "national consultation" on taxes is linked to the EU discussion on ways of providing further financial support to Ukraine.
  • "National consultations" are a propaganda tool of Viktor Orbán's government that imitates a nationwide survey but in fact contains no safeguards against abuse or manipulation of the responses.
  • The Hungarian authorities often use the results of such "consultations" for propaganda purposes, presenting them as opinion polls and even calling them a "referendum".
  • In June 2025, the Hungarian government announced the final results of a similar "referendum", which addressed the question of Ukraine joining the EU, claiming that 95% of participants opposed it.
