Zelenskyy: Ukraine joining NATO as security guarantee not welcomed by some European partners

The US and several European countries have indicated that they do not support Ukraine joining NATO as a security guarantee in discussions surrounding the US administration's "peace plan".

Details: Zelenskyy recalled that Ukraine's goal from the very beginning was to join NATO, saying this would have provided real security guarantees.
Quote: "This approach has not been supported by some of our partners, both in the United States and Europe. Today, bilateral security guarantees between Ukraine and the United States, similar to Article 5 commitments, along with guarantees from our European partners and other countries such as Canada and Japan, are an opportunity for Ukraine to prevent another wave of Russian aggression."
More details: Zelenskyy believes this is already a compromise on Ukraine's part.
Background:
- It was reported earlier that the US may provide Ukraine with security guarantees similar to those envisaged by Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which would be approved by Congress and be legally binding.
- The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will meet with European leaders and Zelenskyy in Berlin.
- The invitation for US representatives to attend the Berlin meeting followed a tense phone call on Wednesday between Friedrich Merz, Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer and Donald Trump, during which the sides sought to overcome differences over the direction of peace efforts.
