Zelenskyy awaits report from Ukraine's chief negotiator after first round of talks with US delegation

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that the first stage of talks between Ukrainian and US delegations has taken place in the United States and he is awaiting a report from Ukraine's chief negotiator Rustem Umierov before the next round.

Details: Zelenskyy also said that representatives of Russia and Europe are in the United States as well. He added that he will be prepared to reveal details of the talks in the US after receiving Umierov's report.

Background:

  • On the evening of 19 December, Umierov said that a meeting between the Ukrainian negotiating delegation and US and European partners had concluded.
  • Politico reported earlier that Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev is set to visit Miami on 20-21 December for talks with Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner regarding the US "peace plan".
  • On 18 December, US President Donald Trump said that talks on ending the war in Ukraine are "getting close to something".
