Details: Zelenskyy said that Macron did raise the issue of further steps in the event that the United States fails to "stop Russia".
Quote: "I told him, and I repeat this openly once again: we must fight for the United States of America; we must fight for a format in which we are together with all our allies, with America as a mediator and with European allies supporting us."
Details: In Zelenskyy's view, if such an alliance fails, "of course, everyone will think about other options and another format. But we still need to keep fighting."
Background:
- On 19 December, Macron said that Europe must find a way to engage directly with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
- On 18 December, US President Donald Trump said that, in his view, negotiations to end the war in Ukraine are "getting close to something".
