Portugal to contribute €50m to US arms purchase initiative for Ukraine

Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal has thanked Portugal for its readiness to contribute €50 million to the PURL initiative, which provides for the purchase of US-made weapons for Ukraine.

Details: Shmyhal thanked Melo for his visit to Kyiv and for Portugal's willingness to make a €50 million contribution to the PURL mechanism.
He also said Portugal will allocate €25 million annually for five years under the SAFE initiative to purchase Ukrainian defence products.
The ministers additionally discussed Ukraine's critical defence needs to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.
Background:
- In Kyiv on 20 December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro signed a partnership agreement on the production of naval drones.
- The agreement was signed during Montenegro's first visit to Ukraine.
- Montenegro also announced a €600,000 contribution to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund.
