Details: Zelenskyy said the call was also attended by Rustem Umierov, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council; Andrii Hnatov, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine; Andrii Sybiha, Foreign Minister and his deputy Serhii Kislytsia; and Deputy Heads of the Office of the President of Ukraine Ihor Brusilo and Oleksandr Bevz.
Zelenskyy also added that Umierov would later hold a separate call with Witkoff and Kushner.
Quote: "We discussed certain substantive details of the ongoing work. There are good ideas that can work toward a shared outcome and lasting peace. Real security, real recovery, and real peace are what all of us need... I hope that today's Christmas understandings and the ideas we discussed will prove useful.
We believe this is the right approach – not to lose a single day or a single opportunity that can bring the result closer. May today's conversation become another step toward peace."
Background:
- Zelenskyy revealed the content of a 20-point "peace plan" agreed with the US for the first time on 24 December.
- Zelenskyy also emphasised that Ukraine would not accept a demand to renounce NATO membership that had been included in an initial 28-point plan by Trump's team.
- Claims from Moscow have indicated that Russia will demand substantial changes to the draft "peace plan" agreed by Ukraine and the US.
