Details: Weber said he would like to see soldiers with a European flag on their uniforms, working together with Ukrainians to secure peace.
Weber said that it was unrealistic to expect Trump to deliver a peaceful settlement relying solely on American soldiers, adding that when it came to European troops, Germany could not stand aside.
According to Weber, Europe had to take responsibility for Ukraine's security.
He stressed that after a ceasefire or the conclusion of a peace agreement, the European flag should be flying along the security line.
In addition, Weber urged the European Union to respond to Washington's retreat from Europe with a new security strategy.
Weber said the EU needed to stop shaping its policy on the basis of documents from Washington, write its own security strategy, test Europe's security architecture and, finally, act with confidence.
Background:
- On 15 December, leaders of a number of European countries and EU institutions agreed, among other things, to create Europe-led multinational forces for Ukraine, made up of volunteers from countries participating in the Сoalition of the Willing and supported by the United States.
- German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has expressed a cautious view on the possible role of European armed forces in Ukraine, noting that much would depend on Vladimir Putin.
