Russia occupied more than 4,000 sq km of Ukrainian territory in 2025 – military analysts

Quote: "This is about 0.72% of Ukraine's total territory. Overall, from 1 January 2023 to 1 January 2026, the increase in occupied territory amounted to 7,463 sq km, or 1.28% of Ukraine's total territory. Compared with previous years, 2025 was indeed difficult for Ukraine's defence forces."
Details: DeepState published the following occupation figures by oblast:
Dnipropetrovsk Oblast – 0.6% (+0.6 over the past year);
Sumy Oblast – 1.0% (+1.0);
Kharkiv Oblast – 4.7% (+1.3);
Kherson Oblast – 72% (no change);
Zaporizhzhia Oblast – 74.8% (+2.1);
Donetsk Oblast – 78.1% (+10.6);
Luhansk Oblast – 99.6% (+0.6).
DeepState also compared the situation with 2022, saying the three-year change was as follows:
Dnipropetrovsk Oblast – 0% ► 0.6%;
Sumy Oblast – 0% ► 1%;
Kharkiv Oblast – 1.9% ► 4.7%;
Kherson Oblast – 72% ► 72%;
Zaporizhzhia Oblast – 72.8% ► 74.8%;
Donetsk Oblast – 56.7% ► 78.1%;
Luhansk Oblast – 97.9% ► 99.6%.
DeepState reports that a total of 116,165 sq km of Ukrainian land is occupied, which is 19.25% of Ukraine's total territory, or one in every five square kilometres.
Crimea remains 100% occupied, while the share of occupied territory on the Kinburn Spit in Mykolaiv Oblast does not affect the overall figures, DeepState added.
