Media outlets in the United States have released footage of the captured president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, who will remain in a prison in Brooklyn.

Details: Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were first taken to the Stewart Air National Guard Base in New York, from where they were flown by helicopter to the Drug Enforcement Administration building in Manhattan. After they arrived in the United States, biometric data were collected from both of them, they were photographed and underwent medical examinations.

From Manhattan, Maduro was taken to a prison in New York, the conditions of which are described as "disgusting and horrifying". At that time, a large group of people with Venezuelan flags had gathered there, along with a significant presence of law enforcement officers.

Footage has emerged showing Maduro being escorted by officers from the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Next week, Maduro is expected to face charges related to drug crimes and weapons offences in a federal court in Manhattan.

  • On the morning of 3 January, explosions were reported in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. A state of emergency has been declared in Venezuela over what authorities described as an "extremely serious military aggression carried out by the current government of the United States".
