EU foreign policy chief on Trump's tariffs over Greenland: Field day for Russia and China

Kaja Kallas, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, has expressed regret that Europe and the US have entered into confrontation over US President Donald Trump's claims on Greenland, which benefits no one except their adversaries.

Details: Kallas noted that following Trump's announcement of increased tariffs against several European allies as punishment for their support of Denmark and Greenland, "China and Russia must be having a field day," as only they benefit from such a split among Western states.
Quote: "If Greenland's security is at risk, we can address this inside NATO. Tariffs risk making Europe and the United States poorer and undermine our shared prosperity. We also cannot let our dispute distract us from our core task of helping to end Russia's war against Ukraine."
Background:
- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen defended Europe's position in support of Denmark and Greenland and warned of the potential negative consequences of Trump's decisions.
- UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called Trump's announced tariffs revenge for defending Denmark a wrong approach, while French President Emmanuel Macron stressed that Europe cannot be intimidated.
- On 17 January, the US president announced the introduction of tariffs from 1 February on several countries that do not agree with his position on Greenland.
- This was preceded by a series of direct statements from Trump regarding his desire to control the island.
