When asked about the prospects for a peace agreement, Trump replied: "We'll have to see what happens."

"We're meeting with Russia, that'll take place tomorrow and we're going to be meeting with President Putin," he added. [N.B. Ukrainska Pravda does not recognise Putin as president – ed.]

Trump also noted that the meeting with Zelenskyy did not cover Ukraine's potential membership in the "Board of Peace" he is establishing – a council that so far has not included any of the US's usual Western European allies.

Background:

  • Ukraine has been invited to join the "Board of Peace" but has not yet responded.
  • The meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump concluded and lasted approximately 50 minutes. Zelenskyy's team described it as "good".
  • Initially, it was reported that Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff was to meet Russian ruler Vladimir Putin on 22 January; Trump's comments suggest the meeting may have been postponed to the following day.
