Quote: "The organisation is providing €2 million from its own donations and is calling on the German business community and the public to make further contributions. As in previous winters, Russia's war of aggression is aimed at destroying infrastructure that provides Ukrainians with heating, electricity and water."

Details: Blau-Gelbes Kreuz, headed by Honorary Consul of Ukraine Linda Mai, has been supporting Ukraine for more than 10 years and since the start of the full-scale war has delivered large volumes of aid, including vehicles, specialised transport for rescue services, hospital beds and medpacks, more than 14,000 generators, as well as assistance for families with children.

"This solidarity is warmth in the literal sense. And it is a friendship that endures. Ukraine will not forget this. Sincere thanks to everyone who makes this possible," Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said.

Background:

  • In recent days, a number of countries announced additional energy assistance for Ukraine as the situation has worsened following the latest Russian strikes. On 23 January, Ukraine held a coordination meeting with the G7, the European Commission and several other partners, during which they were briefed on key needs for repairing the energy system.
  • The first generators purchased with the donations to a Polish fundraising campaign are being sent to Ukraine, along with around 400 generators and heaters from Poland's Government Agency for Strategic Reserves.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos that it is cheaper to prevent Russia from producing missiles than to restore Ukraine's energy system after they strike.
