US considers its security guarantees for Ukraine more valuable than European ones – Politico

The United States is convinced that its security guarantees for Ukraine matter more than those of Europe, despite Washington refusing to send troops to monitor a ceasefire.

Details: Politico says that post-war security guarantees have been one of the key sticking points in the talks between the US, Ukraine, and Russia in Abu Dhabi.
European countries have reportedly insisted on a small presence of foreign troops in Ukraine to monitor the ceasefire, with France and Germany leading this initiative.
A US official dismissed these European commitments, saying the most important guarantees were American ones.
"The Coalition of the Willing efforts are nice. They had a couple helicopters and a couple troops and a couple guarantees here and there, but if you speak to the Ukrainians, it's really the American security guarantees that matter," they added.
US President Donald Trump has also said that Washington would not deploy US troops in Ukraine but would help with monitoring.
US Department of Defense representatives have said US commitments would likely include satellite and intelligence support, drone flights to monitor the demarcation line, and logistical support.
Background:
- Trump said on 11 January that he was ready to take on commitments regarding US participation in Ukraine's future defence but, he said, only because he was confident Russia would not try to invade again.
- The UK and France pledged in a declaration on 6 January to deploy troops in Ukraine if a peace deal is reached.
- Media reported that the overall size of the Coalition of the Willing contingent in Ukraine could be 15,000 troops, with half provided by the UK.
