He added that this was because of "the cold, extreme cold".
Trump did not specify whether he and Putin had a telephone call or whether their communication took place in some other form.
He also did not specify when this happened and when the "week" was supposed to start.
A new wave of freezing cold weather is expected to hit Ukraine on Friday, with temperatures in the north plunging to almost -30 degrees Celsius, while hundreds of apartment buildings in Kyiv still have no heating since Russia's latest attacks and the situation in the energy sector remains difficult overall.
Background:
- On Thursday 29 January, Russian pro-war social media accounts began posting about an alleged order to stop attacking Ukrainian infrastructure, which was received on January 28.
- On Thursday, the European Commission announced €145 million in emergency aid to Ukraine amid intensified Russian strikes on energy infrastructure mid-winter.
- A new round of negotiations on a potential peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine is expected on 1 February.
- US State Secretary Marco Rubio has said that US Special Representative Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner will not be attending, but US participation is "likely".
