He mentioned the PURL programme, which provides procurement of US weapons for Ukraine using funds from other allies, stating that since last summer, NATO countries have delivered 75% of all missiles that have reached Ukraine's defence forces under this initiative.

Rutte also said that since last summer, NATO provided 90% missiles for air defence through the PURL mechanism.

He noted that the Alliance benefits from cooperation with Ukraine because of Ukraine's combat experience and technologies.

The secretary general said that NATO is learning from Ukraine, as the country applies innovations in unique and exceptional ways. He noted that many NATO countries are now working and producing certain types of equipment together with Ukraine and supplying it to Ukraine. He stressed that everyone benefits from this cooperation.

Rutte also emphasised that one of his priorities is strong Ukrainian armed forces. He concluded that NATO not only wants the end of this war but also wants to ensure that the peace is lasting.

Background:

  • NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday 3 February.
  • His visit took place after Russia carried out a large-scale combined strike on Ukraine overnight. This happened against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump saying on 29 January that he had received Putin's agreement not to strike Kyiv "and various towns" for a week, without specifying when the period was supposed to start.
