The United States has proposed ending Russia's war against Ukraine before the summer, as they will have a different priority later – US congressional elections.

He added that domestic issues in the United States would become even more pressing for the American negotiators.

Zelenskyy said it is desirable for Ukraine that the US did not leave the talks and that it is also necessary for the Russians at the moment that the Americans remain involved.

Quote: "As for the Americans, they will probably just have another priority – the Congress. And we understand that they will devote all their time to domestic processes, elections and shifts in public sentiments. Elections are definitely more important for them."

More details: Zelenskyy said that this is the reason why the Americans want the war to end by June and will do everything to achieve this.

Quote: "Overall, we have long proposed to the American side having a truly clear Sequence Plan. So that everyone understands what the sides are going for, at what moment and at which stages. So that the war does not drag on because we really want to end the war and guarantee security."

More details: Zelenskyy was also asked whether signing security guarantees with the US would be possible if the war ends by June.

Quote: "The American side said that one of the options is for all agreements to be signed around the same time. I am not saying it is exactly at one moment, but they are talking about the same time."

Background:

  • Reuters reported on 6 February that American and Ukrainian negotiators discussed the possibility of signing a peace agreement in March and holding elections in Ukraine in May.
  • Reuters also reported that two key issues remain unresolved in the talks: Donbas and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
