Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has cautioned against "overly enthusiastic perceptions" of talks on Ukraine and of "pressure by US leader Donald Trump on Europe and Ukraine".

Quote: "We have said this more than once: we must not fall into some kind of excited perception of what is happening – that President Trump has put the Europeans in their place, put Zelenskyy in his place, and is demanding compliance from them. All of this is fine if we want to achieve peace in Ukraine, but we are not there yet. The negotiations are ongoing; a second round took place in Abu Dhabi, and there is still a long way to go."

Details: Lavrov also criticised the policy of trade wars, saying that the United States "abuses the position of the dollar in the global economy and turns the American currency into a weapon against states it finds objectionable".

Background:

  • Closed working-group talks involving representatives of Ukraine, the United States and Russia took place last week. Earlier, on 23-24 January, the first round of talks was held.
  • On 8 February, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin must meet in person to discuss the most difficult issues in the peace talks, and that only US President Donald Trump can stop the war.
