NATO countries see more people viewing US as unreliable ally, unlikely to deter enemies – poll

A survey conducted in several NATO member states has shown declining trust in the United States as a reliable ally.

Details: In all surveyed countries, far more people described the US as an unreliable ally than a reliable one.
In Germany, half of the adults surveyed gave this response, while in Canada the figure was 57%. In France, those calling the US unreliable outnumbered those calling it reliable by two to one.
The highest confidence in the US was in the United Kingdom, but even there only 35% of Britons said the US is a reliable ally, compared with 39% who considered it unreliable.
US military power is increasingly seen as an uncertain asset, Politico said.
Most adults in France and Germany said they do not believe their countries' ties with the US would deter potential adversaries from attacking. In the UK, the share of people who view the US as an effective deterrent fell sharply by 10 percentage points in just one year.
Negative perceptions of the US outweigh positive ones in the UK, France and Germany across key measures, including whether the US protects democracy, shares their values and acts as a reliable ally.
The survey also shows that an increasing share of respondents in these countries feel the US does not share their values or defend democracy, a long-standing American principle.
In France, only 17% agreed with the statement "the US shares our values", compared with 49% who disagreed. In Germany, 50% said the US does not share their values, and only 18% said Washington "protects democracy".
Despite growing negativity in key NATO countries, respondents expressed some hope for the future. In Germany, France and the UK, most said that US President Donald Trump has undermined relations with their countries, but that ties could recover after he is gone, according to the survey.
